Baby Doll starring Carol Baker

The term “baby doll” dress was after the 1956 movie Baby Doll starring Carol Baker made the style of dress popular. The film was too racy for the conservative 50s and was banned in some countries, and heavily censored in others. Baker’s sexy and childlike character in the movie wore a baby doll dress as a costume during several scenes and the style has been popular ever since.

A baby doll-style dress is short (usually falls about six inches above the knee) and is often trimmed with lace, ruffles, bows and ribbons. The bodice of the dress is usually cut up to the chest and the dress falls loosely around the body. Baby doll dresses are flattering on women of all shapes and sizes because of their ability to disguise problem areas.
